Notion Tip: How to Name Database Dashboards for Better Navigation & Organization
Did you know that you can name database dashboards in Notion?
I discovered this feature in my workspace about a month ago. Though it seems minor, it has made navigating my workspace via the sidebar much easier. I've since implemented this practice in client workspaces as well.
What is a database dashboard?
Although there's no official term for a collection of linked databases on a page, I call it a database dashboard. In Notion workspace architecture, a dashboard is a page that brings together related information around a common theme. It serves as a central hub where you can access everything needed for specific workflows and usually consists of linked database views, related pages and buttons.
For example, my home dashboard contains 3 database dashboards:
Action Base: A collection of databases that I use almost daily.
Time Tracker: A group of 3 linked database views related to the time I’ve logged for tasks.
Task Logs: A collection of 4 linked database views providing details about the time tracker above.
Why name database dashboards?
One day, I opened Notion on my phone with the intention of viewing my time tracker. I navigated to the sidebar, only to realize that it took me a few minutes to find my time tracking charts simply because my dashboards were not labeled.
An unnamed database dashboard is given the default title of “View of [Name of first linked database] and looks like this in the sidebar:
Naming these database dashboards allows for faster retrieval of exactly what you’re looking for in the sidebar and via global search.
How to name database dashboards
Navigate to the dashboard you want to name in the sidebar.
On the page, hover your cursor over the top left of the dashboard.
A menu will appear with options to add an icon, cover, and title.
Give your database dashboard a title +/- an icon.
That’s it — a quick and easy way to make database dashboards easier to find.
Happy naming!
